Blackwood House - An award winning rural retreat on the North Coast of Tasmania

This passive solar home blends Japanese minimalism with biophyllic design principles. The result is a high performing yet relaxed bush retreat.

The Vision: Guided by the prominent Blackwood trees that define this steep, rugged bush block, Blackwood House is a minimalist retreat that respects its terrain. A slight twist against the contour provides a perfect northerly aspect, capturing an ever-changing outlook from the valley to the distant ocean. The design narrative centres on "quiet dignity"—a home that sits lightly on the spur, sharing the colours and textures of the surrounding forest.

The Execution: Construction was driven by thermal mass and honest craft. Burnished concrete floors, deepened with charcoal oxide, provide the base load for passive heat retention, while unsealed Blackwood ceiling linings bring the canopy indoors. Utilising BAL-rated Silver Top Ash shiplap and Rockote Marrakesh natural render, the material palette is raw and seamless. With double glazing and a high-efficiency Nectre N60 wood heater as the sole supplementary heat source, the home is a benchmark for low-energy, high-comfort bush living.
