Bicheno Bushbuck - Hempcrete on the East Coast of Tasmania

This off-grid home exudes honesty in construction. No greenwashing—just a site-responsive approach to high-performance living.

The Project: A resilient, off-grid retreat on the East Coast of Tasmania, utilising the exceptional thermal and sustainable properties of hempcrete construction. The design centers on a breathable building envelope, combining the unrivalled thermal & hygrothermal performance of hempcrete walls with an earthen floor and salvaged slate tiles from Piermont in Swansea. The structural soul of the home is a reclaimed wharf timber post-and-beam frame, ensuring that the project's carbon footprint is as light as its architectural form.

On-Site Strategy: Working with specialised natural materials like hempcrete and massive reclaimed timbers demands precise coordination and respect for craft. We're coordinating with the builders to manage complex formwork and ensure a monolithic, thermally consistent envelope. Using Pro Clima membranes at timber post-and-beam junctions, we've delivered a verified, high-performance sanctuary that provides the owners a healthy year‑round indoor climate.
